On Wednesday I ran the Brooks Urban Herd Run Happy Pub Run 5K (yes, that is a mouthful!) and got a new PR of 30:40. I am so close to being under 30 minutes! Maybe my next 5K?
The race was sponsored by Brooks and started and ended at a local pub/brewery, Bell's Eccentric Cafe where race participants could get a free beer after the race. There were about 400 participants and the proceeds from the race went to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. It was technically a St. Patrick's Day run and lots of people dressed up. I ended up wearing green and white shamrock knee high socks over my running tights, a festive hair tie and a shamrock scarf which fell off halfway through the race and ended up in my pocket the rest of the way.
I met my friend Helen whom I met through Ravelry and have been doing some Urban Herd runs with at the start of the race Even thought it was bright and sunny it was also windy and very very cold, probably the coldest weather I have run in, including running in snow! Breathing in all that cold air made my lungs hurt for awhile after the race. We started off on some of the main roads and then broke off for about 1/2 mile onto the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, then onto more main roads-some of them brick which was...interesting to run on for lack of a better word. I kept having to move left of right to avoid uneven bricks, the last thing I want is a sprained ankle. I actually ran this WHOLE race which is a first for me for this distance. Usually I take a walk break about halfway through my 5k's, but I was determined to run the whole thing this time. I am half marathon training for goodness sake, and I know I have run longer than 3 consecutive miles on some of my training runs, so I knew it was doable.
Chris came along with me this time and took a bunch of pictures (I think he took around 300 total) of all the racers. The good thing about having a husband who is a part time photographer is you get lots of race pictures out of it for free! I think he had a good time too and he may have gotten some good connections out of it.
